ABOUT ME

My Story To You

For ones who don’t know me, I am Nethmi Lavanya, a Sri Lankan, final year student at RMIT University in Vietnam, who will soon be graduating, with a bachelor’s degree of Fashion Merchandise and Management. I feel so nervous but excited at the same time, because blogging is very new to my nature.

Firstly, let me start how I chose Fashion as a pathway. Going back to 2015, right after I finished my Ordinary Level exams, I was entrapped with what I have to choose as my path. Before I realised what my future path would be, I was a person who likes changes. When I was very young, I couldn't stand seeing at least furniture in the same position for months. I used to draw a map behind my book secretly during break hours at school to plan where I would like to move my table, bed or wardrobe. Even when I want to work or study, I want to choose a nice place that brings me a peaceful sensitivity. I used to make quick ornaments out of old jars or Wine bottles and present them to my parents the next day. I always was fantasying dresses that I can bring into life.

I used to think, being weird is wrong but, "What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it's not. And a lot of the time, it's what makes you great" - Emma Stone.

Anyways, my parents sighted my fondness in fashion. My dad wanted me to study at AOD (Academy of Design), one of the best Fashion Design Institutes in Sri Lanka, providing the affiliated degree from Northumbrian University. I once participated in one of their workshops about pattern cutting. It was my time to decide whether I want to do the Advanced Level examination or start with a foundation course in Fashion Design at AOD. A few days deliberations, I came to an agreement that I will undertake Advanced Level Examination, of subjects; Art, English Literature and Information Communication and Technology, that suits to my dream of Fashion.

After finishing my Advanced Level Examination, it was the time where I have to decide strongly, where I want to study, and which part of Fashion would I like to master first. I talk to many seniors who are in the fashion industry, to get a piece of advice on what stream I should select, and the best I can take out of it.

Fashion designing is an artwork, that is put in together to a wearable garment, inspired by aesthetics and natural beauty. On the other hand, Fashion Merchandising and Management will give a broader knowledge in every inch of the fashion world, which covers product manufacturing, designing till retailing. After inspiring discussions I had with people from the industry, I chose to concentrate on the bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandise and Management.

After all these years, admiring the inevitable times of being a student at RMIT University Vietnam, I cannot realize how far I have come surviving in dreadful times meddling with assignments and group work, with no hesitation.

So, this is me. As you know now who I am, my intention of creating a blog is to account my accomplishments, what I have studied, my hobbies, and my DIYs.
